This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Entry Requirements

An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
The visual acuity and manual dexterity to disassemble a chainsaw, sharpen the chain and other components and reassemble the serviced chainsaw components.
The physical ability to safely trim and cut felled trees while using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Participants must demonstrate sufficient physical capacity to handle and operate a chainsaw safely, including the ability to lift, carry, and manoeuvre equipment and materials commonly used during trimming and cutting operations.
Adequate vision and hearing to identify hazards, assess tree characteristics, monitor environmental conditions, and perform felling tasks safely
Basic skills to interpret and complete workplace documentation using technical and workplace specific vocabulary; and effectively consult and coordinate with team members and other appropriate personnel to complete the work
It is recommended students wear lace up steel boots, chain saw trousers or chaps and a 3 in one helmet (hard hat, wear muffs and visor)

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required.

The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Assessment Activities

Performance Tasks:

Check and sharpen (or change) a saw chain, according to manufacturer instructions.
Assess, plan and conduct the trimming and cutting of a felled tree using a chainsaw
Demonstrate six (6) cut types: bridging cuts, swinging cuts, boring cuts, wedge cuts, ripping cuts, and stagger or step cuts.
